Nursing Story

(For my [info]adopt_a_mom application and just because it needs to be recorded. :) )

Aurora was born Monday, Sept 11, 2006 at 11.35p EST at 5lbs, 7.4oz. We were at The Birthing Inn of Loudoun. I had her placed on my stomach as soon as she was born. I didn't have her nurse immediately, because I didn't even realize that was a possibility. I know for next time! While she was on the warmer being cleaned up, her mouth was working on sucking already. It was insane. Then, she was handed to me to be fed. I knew about holds and such, but everything left my head. The nursery attendant folded a pillow and helped me put Aur'a in the football hold. She also instructed me to roll my nipple, because apparently it was flat (news to me!). It was like having a Hoover (TM) attached to my nipple. Seriously. Augh. We were there until Wedesday afternoon and she was doing very well, except for that time we both slept for 5 hours and she didn't wake me, so she didn't get food until just after the fifth hour.

Friday was her first doctor's appointment. She'd lost 2oz from her birth weight, which Dr. Stupid said was a percentage problem, and was a bit yellowed. She threatened to make us supplement, but gave us until Monday. I nursed Aur'a every two hours during the day and every three at night the whole weekend, in addition to taking her outside. [info]mywildkids dropped in and doted, checked our latch, and was generally encouraging. :D Monday came and Aur'a was down to 5lbs, 2oz. We were instructed to start supplementing to fix her weight and her "breastmilk jaundice" (which I now know is non-existant--I was naive). I got very upset, but consented to a bili and thyroid test. Her bili was up to 16.9. Her T4 and TSH were high--for an adult. Since I know about TSH/T4, since I have thyroid problems, I knew Dr. Stupid was clueless. She just read off the sheet and told us it was high. We checked the numbers and they were fine. I contacted [info]mywildkids and told her what was going on. She checked her charts and I did some math. Aur'a had only lost 6% of her birthweight, which is below average for a breastfed baby of her age. Dr. Stupid also wanted us to come in for another visit that same week, but our insurance wouldn't cover it and we didn't trust her at this point. This was the point we began to look for a new doctor.

That Friday, we got the results on a second blood test. 10.9. :) I win. She was up to 5lbs, 12oz with no sign of jaundice by the two-week visit with the new Ped.

Around the beginning, [info]mywildkids helped me identify an overactive letdown / foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. My poor baby was very gassy and I leaked a lot, etc. We started out with a one hour block of feeding, then after a few days moved up until we got to 8 hours. I'm finally back down to 6 hours, but I honestly prefer the 6-hour blocks to anything higher or lower. They're easiest to keep track of. :)

We're doing absolutely wonderfully now, with the exception of intermittent teething fits that go nowhere and make her strike for brief periods. Nursing vacations take care of that pretty well. :) I'm planning to stay a SAHM, so we can deal with it. I've got the time!

My writing is lame to-day. :( Alex is going to help me fix it up later when he's not half-asleep.
